I'm very happy to announce that I am one of ten artists chosen in the "PETS" art competition sponsored by Art-Competition.net. All proceeds from this event go directly to the ASPCA. This is an online event and the show will open July 8th at Gallery25N. My Flying Dog, Happy Abby and Johnny Rests will be appearing in the gallery.
Let's Fly also won honorable mention at the ongoing Art Center Manatee show No Boundaries.
More pups go missing on the July 4th holiday than any other time of the year. This is particularly sad because the rescues and no kill shelters that may possibly take them in also struggle during the summer months with people leaving their pets behind to go on vacation and a shortage of volunteers. Although we faithful pet people would never dream of leaving our pets behind, losing our pet on the holiday can really happen to anyone.
This July 4th will be the first time my Marvelous Mystery Mutt Johnny will be up close and personal with the Fireworks. He's a wreck at home when they are miles away! So I plan on keeping him inside and close by my side. Abby on the other hand is not phased a bit and generally seems to wonder what all the fuss is about.
The BARK recently posted some excellent tips to help us and our pups enjoy a happy and safe holiday. Keeping Dogs Safe and Happy This Fourth of July.
Tampa International Airport is seeking to commission artists to create bold, innovative public art projects for the Tampa International Airport Public Art Program. Click on the image above for more information.
The Hillsborough County Arts Council also has some interesting calls out as well!
I discovered, through DogMilk, a great new Instagram account Camping With Dogs! There are just tons of awesome pups out in the great blue yonder! If you are on Instagram make sure to check it out! Camping With Dogs also has a great online shop with some hip vintage tees to check out!
Oh and don't forget to follow us on Instagram as well! Right now as well as my pet portraits and other artwork I am posting images from #The100DayProject. I am designing an image every day for 100 days and posting them to Instagram. I have also opened a Society6 shop, Evelyn Contemporary Design where you can purchase prints of the images.
And finally Abby, Johnny, Philip and I, along with our sharks will be headed to New Jersey this weekend. I will be visiting family while our show is at Freedomfest in Freehold New Jersey. Our neighbors (my brother in law) will be holding down the fort at home.
So we will be on hiatus until the second week of July. Everyone here at Barking Dog Ranch wishes you and your family a very safe and Happy 4th of July weekend! Lots of stuff is happening in our country right now. No matter what you think of some of the events remember that ours is still the best country there is and I for one would not want to live anyplace else!
Now go share some of those hotdogs and hamburgers with your pups!
Here are some great Summer Health Tips I found over at Bark. Also check out their latest newsletter for dog friendly excursions and outdoor activities!
I have my business cards made at MOO.com, and I have to tell you they are absolutely awesome! A little more money than some may want to spend but quite frankly worth every penny. I laminate mine to repel dog slobber at events!
They have a fantastic blog and this week I have to share this post about artists working with paper, their stuff is absolutely amazing! CHECK IT OUT HERE!
Here at Barking Dog Ranch we are all about the laid back life style and comfort. So when we are chillin' at home we wear our lounge collars from Blanket ID! Blanket ID came up with the concept to have a more comfortable collar for time at home that can still have an ID tag in case your pup gets lost. The collar just slides right over the head of your dog. They have awesome tags you register online so all the information is there about your pup. The back of the tag says "Find my Human", I love that! They have a new line out called "Life Saver" for when you hit the road this summer with your four legged companion!
A call to artists underway until the end of this June will culminate in the third annual “Florida Flavor” at Art Center Sarasota, a juried exhibition to showcase the extraordinary talents of Florida-based artists. Click here to find out more: Florida Flavor Call to Artists
I know a lot of people feel strongly on the idea of a "pack leader" when it comes to the behavior of dogs. It is not something I have ever ascribed to but I understand why so many have. So here's an article over at the BARK some folks may find interesting. Alpha Gets a Make Over What do you think? Leave a comment and let me know!
Summer is just about here and in Florida it's pretty much here all the time! So make sure to take a moment and read this blog post from the folks at Mercola. It can save you and your pet a whole lot of grief. Just like people, overheating and or heatstroke with dogs can get very dangerous very fast.
I wanted to share the new website of fellow florida artist Meg Pierce. I met Meg when entering a show at Towles Court Artist Colony in Sarasota. She looked at my name and asked if I had been awarded an artist residency at Weir Farm National Historic Site in Connecticut. I had and so had she in the same year! I have seen her over the years at art shows and followed her work on Facebook. She creates beautiful mixed media images that shimmer in their subtlety. Take a moment and check out her beautiful work! They don't see so well and bump into stuff. They sometimes forget to go outside before they do their business. They can't seem to hear you very well. These are all things that happen when your dog gets older. But remember they are most likely going to happen to you as well! To me there is nothing better than a senior dog. My Abby doesn't see much anymore and I'm not really sure what's going on with her hearing. She hears me sometimes and runs in the other direction! But none of this matters to me, not even the fact she still poops on my porch even though I just repainted it! I love her and Johnny with all my heart, they are seniors and I will be one as well in the blink of an eye. They may not be there with me then, but I can guarantee I will have another old pup by my side.
The Bark has just published their summer reading list highlighting the pups! I would have to add Dog Songs, by poet Mary Oliver. One of my very favorites.
